From Unemployed Undergrad to Full-Time Writer: My Unexpected Career Journey

Person Writing on Notebook

If someone had told me years ago that I’d be making a living through writing, I probably would’ve laughed and said, "Yeah, right." Because back then, my main goal wasn’t to become a writer—it was to figure out how to make my own money without sitting in a classroom all day.

Skipping College & Chasing Freedom

After finishing Senior High, I decided not to pursue college. Not because I wasn’t capable, but because I just didn’t want to. School felt repetitive, and I couldn’t imagine spending another four years stuck in a cycle of lectures, exams, and homework. The idea of being financially independent excited me way more than any degree ever could.

While most of my classmates were preparing for university, I was busy scrolling through job postings and brainstorming ways to make money. I didn’t have a plan—just a strong desire to start working and figure things out along the way.

Then, something unexpected happened. A friend of mine (who, looking back, was basically my career fairy godmother) introduced me to SEO writing. She told me it was a great way to earn online, and the best part? I didn’t need a diploma—just skills, practice, and the willingness to learn.

She even trained me, teaching me the basics of keyword research, optimization, and writing for the web. Looking back, I had no idea how much this moment would change my life.

Writing Has Always Been My Thing

Funny enough, my writing journey didn’t start with SEO. It actually started way back in grade school.

I was that kid who loved words. I joined the Journalism Club, wrote articles, and even won a few awards in writing competitions. Back then, I didn’t think much of it—I just loved expressing myself through words. Writing came naturally to me, but I never considered it as a serious career path.

Oh, and let’s not forget my cringey diaries. If my younger self ever saw this blog, she’d probably scream because, wow, I wrote a lot of dramatic journal entries. From random thoughts to overly emotional life updates (why did I think losing a pen was the end of the world?), I poured my heart into every page.

At the time, I thought I was just writing for fun. But looking back, all those years of journaling and storytelling helped shape my ability to communicate through words. I just didn’t realize it until much later.

Turning Passion into a Career

Once I started SEO writing, everything just clicked.

At first, I was nervous. The imposter syndrome was real—I kept thinking, "Can I really do this?" But the more I wrote, the more confident I became. I started taking on more projects, improving my skills, and learning about different types of content—blogs, web copy, social media posts, and more.

Writing for SEO wasn’t always easy, but I loved the challenge. I enjoyed figuring out how to balance creativity with strategy, how to make content engaging while also ranking on search engines. What started as a simple way to make money turned into something I genuinely loved.

Fast forward to today—I’m now a full-time writer, working for a B2B company, and still growing in this field. Over the years, my writing has become more technical and professional, but one thing hasn’t changed: my love for storytelling.

Why I Reopened My Blog

The thing about professional writing is that while it’s fulfilling, it can also be limiting. Don’t get me wrong—I love what I do. But after years of working on structured content, I started to miss writing freely.

I missed pouring my thoughts onto a page without worrying about keywords, formatting, or branding guidelines. I missed writing in my own voice—the way I used to when I was younger.

That’s why I decided to reopen That Girl Blog Spot—to bring back that freedom.

This blog is my little space on the internet where I can be me. No rules, no SEO strategies—just raw, honest, unfiltered thoughts. I want to write about life, growth, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

Think of it as my personal journal, but with an audience (which is slightly terrifying, but exciting at the same time).

What I’ve Learned Along the Way

If there’s one thing my journey has taught me, it’s that you don’t have to follow the traditional path to succeed.

I didn’t go to college. I didn’t have a clear plan. I just followed what felt right, took chances, and embraced the opportunities that came my way. And honestly? I wouldn’t change a thing.

Because sometimes, success isn’t about having it all figured out—it’s about taking that first step, even when you’re unsure where it will lead.

Following Your Passion Might Lead You to Something Great

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from my journey, it’s that passion has a way of leading you exactly where you’re meant to be—even if you don’t realize it at first.

When I skipped college, I had no idea what the future held for me. I just knew that school wasn’t for me and that I wanted to make my own money. At the time, I felt a little lost, unsure if I was making the right decision. But looking back, choosing to follow what felt right instead of what was expected led me to something even better—a career in writing that I truly love.

The thing about passion is that it doesn’t always show up as a big, obvious sign. Sometimes, it’s hidden in the little things—the hobbies you enjoy, the skills that come naturally to you, the things you do just for fun.

I spent years writing in journals, competing in school writing contests, and even pouring my emotions into Teen Angst Manuscripts. I never thought any of it would amount to anything. But in the end, those little moments helped shape the career I have today.

So if you’re feeling stuck, unsure, or afraid to take a different path, trust yourself. Your passion might not give you a clear roadmap, but it will guide you in ways you never expected. Stay open, take risks, and follow what excites you. You never know where it might take you.

What’s Next?

For now, I’m focusing on growing as a writer, exploring new ideas, and sharing my journey through this blog. I don’t know exactly what the future holds, but one thing’s for sure—I’m excited for whatever comes next.
